The sound hit racing fans first. Before they found a place to watch the weekend's Freedom 250 Grand Prix festivities around the National Mall, the hum and whine -- like a swarm of furious hornets -- of race cars hitting speeds of more than 150 mph assaulted eardrums for blocks.
